Builder's flexibility wraps up the deal

Among the empty nesters and retirees settling into Woodstock's Cornerstone Park is 79-year-old Charlie Chambers. He was the first resident in the maintenance-free community, buying a three-bedroom, three-bathroom cluster home with a basement. It was a big decision for Chambers, whose wife died three years ago.

Q: When did you move in?
A: April 13th

Q: Where did you move from?
A: I was staying with my son in Roswell.

Q: Why were you attracted to Cornerstone Park?
A: I had been trying to find a builder that would make some modifications on their home, within reason. I finally stumbled on Homes by Brumby [Cornerstone Park's builder]. Those were the only people that seemed to be amenable to some of my questions.

Q: What was your experience in other communities?
A: I looked at a dozen subdivisions [in Cherokee and Forsyth counties]. I had one builder with a beautiful home. The shower in the master bath was the size of one of these [portable toilets] you would see in the street. They wouldn't modify it.

Q: What was your reaction?
A: Just frustration. I had to walk away from a beautiful lot with a view.

Q: What did you find at Cornerstone Park?
A: I had so many changes, it's unbelievable. They did everything to my satisfaction. When I first saw this house, I said, "There's some furniture which won't fit in two of the rooms in this house. If I can get 3 more feet on this side of the house, I would be willing to talk."
They put 3 feet on the house. That was a major one. That triggered everything. After that, I requested carpet upgrades, tile, they provided just about everything I asked for.

Q: How far do you live from your son now?
A: Only six miles.
